    Hey PalmerLouie...I was lucky enough to sit about 3 feet away from Negro's left foot at the Blue Note NYC a few years back and the beater at rest is like 1-2 inches from the block/cowbell. That way, gravity doesn't make it bounce when his foot's not on the pedal. It takes some getting used to, but the pedal's alot more cooperative when switching to and fro'...Hope that's helpful.
